Volcán Barú hike
6 km / 1,300 m elevation gain. Start 11 pm-midnight to reach summit at sunrise (5-6 am) → see Pacific + Caribbean oceans simultaneously. Guide $50-80/person, recommended (unmarked trail, +0°C at summit). Self-guided possible for experienced hikers.
Coffee farm visit + tasting
Finca Lerida or Café Ruiz: 2-3h tour including picking, drying, roasting, Geisha tasting. $25-40/person. Book ahead.
Caldera hot springs
Natural thermal source 30 min by car (gravel road). $5 entry. 35-40°C water, local vibe, simple. Bring towel + sandals.
Quetzales Trail
8 km trail through cloud forest between Boquete and Cerro Punta. Chance to see quetzals (iconic Central American bird). 4-5h, $5 entry. Guide recommended.

Boquete center all walking (quiet streets, small restaurants). For activities outside center: Uber/taxi.
Parking
Rental car ideal ($30-50/day, get 4x4 for hot springs). Free parking everywhere except hotels.

Possible — cost of living 30-40% cheaper, solid expat community, pleasant climate. Constraints: fewer medical options (David 45 min away), less reliable internet, international hospitals in PA-city. Ideal for retirees, writers, nomads.
Do you really need to climb Volcán Barú?
If you're fit and want a defining experience: yes. Otherwise: skip — hike is tough (1,300 m gain), cold at top, view weather-dependent. Easier alternative: Pipeline Trail (4-5h, beginner-accessible).
Safe solo?
Very — Boquete is one of Panama's safest towns. Expat community looks out for each other. Low visible crime.
