When to go
Late afternoon (4-7 pm) for golden hour + bearable temperatures. Avoid noon to 3 pm — direct sun on white cobblestones, brutal. Avoid weekend lunch when cruise ships dump 500+ tourists. Tuesday/Thursday morning = nearly empty, ideal for photos.
What to do
Altar de Oro — Iglesia San José
The wooden altar covered in solid gold leaf (11 m high), one of the few Spanish treasures to survive Henry Morgan's 1671 sack. Free entry, $1-2 donation suggested.
Sunset rooftop
Casa Casco (cocktails $8-12), Tantalo Kitchen (the most famous), La Concordia (Cathedral view). Reservation essential on weekends.
Salsa Sunday
La Diabla, Habana Panama or Las Clementinas on Sunday night — cover $5-10, Cuban vibe, open until 2 am.
Plaza de Francia + Las Bóvedas
Casco's southern tip, French obelisk commemorating the Lesseps canal effort. Bóvedas tunnel (old Spanish prisons) = covered passage + seafront restaurants.

- Metro
- 5 de Mayo station (Line 1) — 10 min walk to the Casco entrance. Or Iglesia del Carmen + Uber.
- Bus
- MiBus 5-Mayo ↔ Casco. Ask for "Casco Antiguo" stop. $0.35/ride with the Metrobus card.
- Uber / InDriver
- $3-5 from Bella Vista / Marbella, $4-7 from Punta Pacífica, $15-20 from Tocumen airport.
- On foot
- From Cinta Costera: 25-min walk along the waterfront (hot, bring water + cap). The final stretch passes through the Mariscos area — be cautious at night.
- Parking
- Plaza V Centenario parking ($2/h) or free street parking on Av. Central before 6 pm. The Casco itself is very tight on parking.
Expat tips
- Closed-toe flat shoes : cobblestones are uneven, heels impossible
- Cash in addition to card : some street vendors, public restrooms, small galleries are cash-only
- Restaurants 30-50% more expensive than the rest of the city — go to Bella Vista or Mercado de Mariscos for $5-8 ceviche instead
- Cap + sunscreen during the day : zero shade on the plazas
- Modest dress to enter churches (shoulders + knees covered)
- At night : stay on Av. Central and the main streets. Avoid Calle 8-9 west after 11 pm
- Banistmo / Banco General ATMs at the Casco entrance — inside ATMs charge $5-7 fees
FAQ
Is the Casco safe?
Much more than in 2015. By day and evening up to 11 pm, yes — especially main streets (Av. Central, Plaza Mayor, Plaza Bolívar). Past midnight, some western corners (Calle 8-9 toward Chorrillo) still warrant caution. Tourist police is present.
How long to visit?
Half-day minimum for the 4 plazas + Cathedral + San José. A full day if you want to add the Teatro Nacional + rooftop + dinner.
Are there affordable restaurants?
Very few. Most are $20-40/person. For cheap local : walk 5 min to Mercado de Mariscos (ceviche $5-8) or down to Bella Vista (varied, $10-15).
Wheelchair accessible?
Partially. The plazas are flat but the cobblestones are uneven. Many sidewalks lack curb cuts. Churches usually have a step at entry. Ask a local for the flattest itineraries.
Photo policy in churches?
Cathedral: allowed without flash. San José: allowed except during mass. Compañía (ruins): OK everywhere. Always ask before photographing worshippers in prayer.
