Stripe doesn’t cover Panama. Wise doesn’t open a Panamanian account. PayPal in Panama is a trap. How do you sell your digital products (ebooks, courses, SaaS, templates) from Panama City in 2026? The architecture that works, field-tested by 6 expat founders.
The wall everyone hits
You arrive in Panama with a simple digital project: sell your ebooks/courses/templates to US/UK/EU customers. You think: “Stripe handles everything.”
Except Stripe doesn’t support Panama. Neither as an incorporation country (you can’t create a Stripe account with a Panamanian SA), nor as a payout country (you can’t have Stripe pay out to your Tower Bank account).
Direct consequence: you have to choose between 4 architectures, each with its traps.
The 4 possible architectures from Panama
Architecture 1: Lemon Squeezy (Merchant of Record)
For whom: you’re starting out or you sell to Europeans.
How it works: Lemon Squeezy becomes the official seller of your products. You don’t invoice directly. Lemon Squeezy invoices your customers, collects EU/UK VAT, and pays you the net (your revenue − 5% + USD 0.50/transaction − collected VAT). You receive this net on PayPal or Wise USD.
Pros:
- ✅ EU VAT managed automatically (huge — saves 6–12 months of OSS setup)
- ✅ 30-minute setup (account created + first product live)
- ✅ Reliable weekly payouts
- ✅ US tax support if you’re comfortable (Lemon Squeezy reports to the US)
- ✅ 5% built-in affiliate program
Cons:
- ⚠️ 5% fee + USD 0.50/transaction (~6–7% of effective revenue)
- ⚠️ You don’t have the direct contractual relationship with your customer (LS handles support)
- ⚠️ Refunds 100% at Lemon Squeezy discretion (strict 30-day policy)
Target profile: 95% of Panama expat founders selling digital products (ebooks, courses, templates) to US/UK/EU audiences.
Architecture 2: Gumroad (no MoR, but simple)
For whom: you already have a Gumroad catalog or you sell primarily to US/CA.
How it works: you sell directly via your Gumroad storefront. Gumroad collects payments and pays you monthly (PayPal, Stripe, or SWIFT). If you sell in EU >EUR 10,000/year, you MUST manage OSS VAT yourself.
Pros:
- ✅ Ultra-simple setup (5 min, faster than Lemon Squeezy)
- ✅ Existing Gumroad catalog if you’ve been selling since 2018–2024
- ✅ Creator community (native discoverability)
- ✅ Customizable storefront
Cons:
- ⚠️ 10% fees + USD 0.30/transaction (~11–13% of effective revenue) — 2× more expensive than Lemon Squeezy
- ⚠️ EU VAT on you if >EUR 10,000/year (painful compliance)
- ⚠️ Expensive SWIFT payouts (USD 35–70 combined Gumroad + receiving bank fees)
- ⚠️ The famous SWIFT trap: direct payouts to Panamanian bank slow (5–10 days) + possible KYC review (3–15 additional days)
SWIFT trap solution: use PayPal Gumroad → Wise USD, much cheaper and faster.
Architecture 3: Stripe Atlas (US LLC)
For whom: SaaS with recurring subscriptions, significant MRR (>USD 5,000/month).
How it works: you create a US LLC (Delaware or Wyoming) via Stripe Atlas. You get an EIN without SSN (2–4 months). You open a US bank account (Mercury, Brex) linked to the LLC. You use Stripe with this LLC. You file your US LLC with the IRS annually.
Pros:
- ✅ 2.9% + USD 0.30/transaction (cheapest in %)
- ✅ Stripe = SaaS industry standard
- ✅ You become B2B-billable with US EIN
Cons:
- ⚠️ Setup 4–6 months (US LLC + EIN + Mercury + Stripe activation)
- ⚠️ Annual costs: USD 500/year LLC + USD 600–1,200/year US accountant
- ⚠️ US compliance (Form 1120 + 5472 annually)
- ⚠️ Useless for one-shot ebook sales (pays off from USD 50,000/year MRR)
Target profile: 5% of Panama founders with a recurring SaaS at scale.
Architecture 4: Panama SA direct (rare)
For whom: you sell B2B to Panamanians or LATAM. Very niche for ebooks.
How it works: you invoice via your Panamanian SA with RUC. Your clients pay you by direct USD wire or Yappy (the Panamanian payment app). Accounting handled by a Panamanian contador.
Pros:
- ✅ No platform fees
- ✅ Clean Panamanian accounting (territorial)
Cons:
- ⚠️ No integrated e-commerce infrastructure
- ⚠️ You have to build your own payment funnel (manual)
- ⚠️ Yappy does not support international payments
- ⚠️ Very rarely used for B2C ebook sales
Platform/receiving account compatibility table
| Platform | Wise USD ✓ | PayPal ✓ | Mercury (US LLC) ✓ | Panama bank direct |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ Wire $25-45 |
| Gumroad | ⚠️ Indirect via PayPal | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ SWIFT $35-70 |
| Stripe Atlas | N/A (pays Mercury) | N/A | ✅ Native | ❌ Not direct |

Inside Panama recommended architecture (18 months field-tested)
Optimal 2026 configuration for an average Panama expat founder:
- Lemon Squeezy for EU/US/CA digital products (VAT auto-managed, MoR)
- Gumroad for legacy catalog if already existing (used audience)
- Wise USD as receiving hub (multi-currency account + UK IBAN)
- Tower Bank SA Pro for final USD → Panamanian operations conversion
- Panamanian contador for personal/SA separation + tasa única
Total architecture cost: ~6–8% of effective revenue (vs 11–13% Gumroad alone, or 8–12% Stripe Atlas with US accounting).
The PayPal trap in Panama
Important: PayPal allows Panama expats to create an account and receive money. But:
- Withdrawing to a Panamanian bank: 10–15 days, SWIFT fees USD 20–50, often blocked after several significant withdrawals (PayPal KYC flagging)
- Proven solution: PayPal as intermediary → Wise USD (instant + USD 1–2 fees) → Tower Bank USD-USD (free)
This chain is used by 80% of Panama City expat founders.
EU VAT compatibility: crucial for selling in Europe
If you sell to European customers:
| Platform | EU VAT handled? | OSS compliance required? | Filing effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | ✅ Auto (MoR) | ❌ No | Zero |
| Gumroad | ❌ On you | ✅ Yes >EUR 10k EU | OSS quarterly |
| Stripe Atlas | ❌ Via LLC | ✅ Yes >EUR 10k EU | OSS + Form 1120 US |
| Paddle | ✅ Auto (MoR) | ❌ No | Zero |
| FastSpring | ✅ Auto (MoR) | ❌ No | Zero |
Field advice: for selling to a European audience, choose a Merchant of Record (Lemon Squeezy or Paddle or FastSpring). The time + compliance savings vastly outweigh the 5–8% fees.
Panamanian accounting: the separation question
When you sell online from Panama, you have 3 accounting chapters to separate:
- Platform revenues (Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad payouts) → counted under Panamanian territorial taxation
- Source outside Panama (EU/US/CA customers) → 0% Panama tax
- Source Panama (rare Panamanian customers) → local tax
- Personal vs SA pro accounts: mandatory separation
- SA pro receives pro revenue
- You pay yourself identified dividends/salaries
- US accounting if LLC: Form 1120 + 5472 mandatory, USD 600–1,200/year
Strong recommendation: engage a Panamanian contador (USD 60–150/month) familiar with the digital ecosystem from day one. No solo guesswork.
