Panamanian climate in 1 minute
Tropical hot and humid year-round. No cold season. Two seasons:
- Dry season (verano): December → April, sunny, ideal for moving in
- Rainy season (invierno): May → November, afternoon rains (3pm-8pm), beautiful mornings
Temperatures: 28-34°C (82-93°F) year-round in Panama City, feels-like often +5°C due to humidity.

The 3 climate phenomena to know
1. “Veranillo de San Juan” — the fake dry season of July
For 2 to 3 weeks late June / early July, rains partially interrupt: blue skies, return of sun, wind. Local phenomenon known to all Panamanians. Good time for local vacation if you’re stuck in rainy season.
2. “Frentes fríos” — cold fronts of January-March
During dry season, cold fronts from the Caribbean bring 3-7 days of dry air and strong wind (up to 40 km/h on the Pacific coast). Temperatures drop to 22-23°C at night (cool for Panama). Ideal to visit Pedasí or sail.
3. The “wet wet wet” of October
October is statistically the rainiest month. Possible urban floods in low-lying neighborhoods of Panama City (San Francisco north part, Calidonia, Curundú). Avoid signing a ground-floor lease if you arrive during this period without first seeing the neighborhood.
How to adapt — practical guide
Air conditioning: the big variable
Panama City: AC nearly essential 9 months out of 12. My personal setting: 24°C max + ceiling fan + AC off when I leave. Result: $65-95/month in electricity for a 65 m² apartment (vs $250-350 if you run 18-20°C 24/7).
Boquete: AC unnecessary, open the windows. Savings $100-200/month vs Panama City.
Bocas, Pedasí: AC needed at night, fan during the day.
Humidity: the fight against mold
Panama City humidity ranges 70% to 90% by season. Consequences:
- Cotton/linen clothes feel better than synthetic
- Dehumidifier (~$80) in the office and clothing closets
- Damp-Rid (~$5) in every closet, renewed monthly
- Ventilation = leave AC in “Dry” mode 1h after turning it off
- Leather (shoes, bags) air out 1× a week in the sun to avoid mold
Sunscreen and hydration
The Panamanian sun is treacherous: under overcast skies (rainy season), you still get sunburn in 30 minutes at noon. SPF 50+ sunscreen mandatory year-round.
Daily water: 2.5-3 liters/day minimum, more if you exercise or walk a lot. Buy a reusable bottle, tap water is drinkable in Panama City (but many expats prefer bottled the first weeks).
Clothes to bring
- Never wool sweater, down jacket, thick jeans
- Lots of cotton/linen t-shirts (they dry quickly)
- Light sweater for over-AC’d offices/restaurants (18-20°C inside!)
- Compact rain jacket in your backpack during rainy season
- Sandals + sneakers but avoid closed leather shoes (humidity = moldy in 2-3 months)
- Swimsuit × 2 (including in the city, condo pools serve year-round)
When you really should NOT arrive
- September-October: psychologically difficult (intense rains, overcast skies, 90% humidity, flooded streets). If you can push your flight to November 15, do it.
- Easter (Holy Week): beaches packed with Panamanians, prices multiplied by 2-3, not ideal for scouting.
Climate by your profile
Coming from Northern Europe
Good news: your body will appreciate the predictability. Bad: the first 6 weeks, humidity will feel stifling. Solution: arrive in December-February when humidity is at 70%, give yourself 6-8 weeks to adapt before rains arrive.
Coming from US South / Caribbean
Almost no adaptation needed. The Panamanian climate is very close to Miami / Florida / Houston / Caracas.
If you’re a retiree 60+
Avoid low-altitude Panama City if you’re heat-sensitive. Boquete or Coronado (Pacific coast with breeze) are far more comfortable choices. 24/7 AC in Panama City can weigh on respiratory health.
If you have kids
OK anywhere but favor schools with outdoor pools (the majority). Avoid September-October arrival due to potential flooding of school routes.
