The biggest carnival in Latin America after Rio, more authentic than Veracruz, more accessible than New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. Las Tablas draws 200,000 people over 4 days in February. If you live in Panama or you’re visiting during the dry season, it’s the once-in-a-lifetime event to see.
Why Las Tablas Carnival is unique
Panama has 6 major carnivals (Panama City, Chitré, Penonomé, Pedasí, Las Tablas, Bocas del Toro), but Las Tablas is the most iconic. Los Santos Province, 5,000 inhabitants normally → 200,000 during carnival. The town turns into one giant 24/7 parade.
What makes Las Tablas special:
- The Calle Arriba vs Calle Abajo rivalry: two streets that have battled since 1949 for the best float, the best queen, the best band. You PICK A SIDE on arrival and wear the colors (red = Arriba, blue = Abajo). No neutrality tolerated.
- The “culecos”: tanker trucks that dump 10,000 liters of water on the crowd at noon for 3 hours in 35°C heat. Picture a water fight the size of a stadium. People dance in their soaked traditional costumes.
- The polleras de gala: hand-embroidered traditional dresses, some costing USD 5,000-15,000 to make (300-500 hours of embroidery). The Sunday-evening parade is intense.
- The Tuesday-night climax: coronation of the Arriba and Abajo queens, fireworks at midnight, a party until 4am. Nobody sleeps.

Saturday — Opening
- 10am-1pm: First culeco (Calle Arriba opens hostilities on the main avenue)
- 3pm-5pm: Children’s parade from both streets
- 8pm-11pm: Folk-band concerts on Plaza Belisario Porras
- midnight: First modest fireworks
Sunday — La Pollera de Gala (the most photogenic day)
- 11am-2pm: Calle Abajo culeco, more carnival-like atmosphere (music + costumes)
- 5pm-7pm: Pollera parade — the queens and their attendants parade in gala polleras (hand-embroidered dresses). Over 500 polleras parade. This is THE Instagram moment.
- 9pm-1am: Típico concerts + Panamanian cumbia

Monday — Ladies’ Day + Night parade
- 11am-2pm: Calle Arriba culeco (memorable, more intense than Saturday)
- 3pm-5pm: Official Ladies’ Day (red/blue scarves handed out)
- 7pm-11pm: GRAND NIGHT PARADE: giant illuminated floats (15-20 floats, 6-8m tall, weeks of construction). The most visual parade.

Tuesday — The climax
- 10am-1pm: Last culeco (Calle Abajo, maximum intensity, the town flooded)
- 5pm-8pm: Final parade of both streets on Avenida Belisario Porras
- 9pm-11pm: Official coronation of the Arriba and Abajo queens
- midnight: Closing fireworks (15-20 min, the biggest budget of the year in Las Tablas)
- midnight-4am: After-parties in every bar and cantina
Wednesday — Burial of the sardine
- 3pm-5pm: Mock funeral; a giant plastic sardine is buried, a symbol of the carnival’s end and the start of Lent
- 6pm: Bars start to empty. Everyone sleeps.

On-the-ground tip (Jade, February 2026): for our first time, we stayed in Chitré for 3 nights (Hotel Versalles, USD 120/night). We took a taxi (USD 15-25) to Las Tablas in the early afternoon and came back after the fireworks. Perfect balance. If we go back in 2027, we’ll try to stay in Las Tablas itself to live the climax on foot.

Tourist traps to avoid
- Not booking ahead → you end up sleeping in your car (yes, it happens every year)
- Not picking a side Arriba vs Abajo → you get teased for 4 days
- Underestimating the heat → 32-35°C + alcohol + crowd = fainting; hydrate to the max
- Unprotected phone → the culecos soak everything. A waterproof pouch is mandatory (USD 5 at the supermarket)
- Drunk driving → police checkpoints everywhere, zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel in Panama
- Buying a real tourist gala pollera → you pay USD 800-2,000 for a mass-produced thing. Prefer the mini polleras (souvenir) at USD 30-80
- Missing the burial of the sardine on Wednesday → it’s a cult moment and most tourists have already left. Stay if you can
Travel smart: Carnival + Pedasí combo
The Azuero region (Los Santos + Herrera provinces) is huge and gorgeous. If you’re traveling from Panama City for carnival, make the most of it:
- Thursday-Friday before carnival: 2 days in Pedasí (calm beaches, surf, dolphins)
- Saturday-Tuesday: Las Tablas Carnival
- Wednesday-Thursday: recovery at Playa Venao (40 min from Las Tablas)
- Friday: return to Panama City
Total: 8-9 days for a complete Panama experience (and you get your money’s worth from the domestic flight).
