You land tomorrow at Tocumen with your home-country phone. You’ll have to:
- Get off the plane, clear Migración (15-30 min)
- Collect your suitcase (10-20 min)
- Find the +Móvil kiosk (45 min line on busy days)
- Buy a Panamanian SIM ($15-20) + activate it (10 min)
- Only then can you open Uber
Total lost: 1h-1h30 minimum. Meanwhile, the taxi touts offer you Costa del Este at $80 (vs $35 via Uber). You pay double for your first hour in Panama.
The alternative has existed since 2020: the HolaFly eSIM. You activate it before your flight from your phone (5 minutes), you land connected, you open Uber on the way out. Here’s how it works and what it costs.
HolaFly Panama eSIM 2026 — summary
- Setup: before your flight, from your smartphone (QR code by email, 5 min)
- Activation: on landing in Panama (toggle ON in your Settings)
- Data: unlimited 4G/5G, hotspot allowed
- Durations: 5 to 90 days
- Price: $19 (5 d) → $87 (90 d) — see full table below

The no-eSIM scenario — field story March 2026
Jade, day 1:
Landing 10:45 PM at Tocumen with two suitcases and two dogs. Migración packed (Madrid flight + New York flight simultaneously): 35 min line. At the exit, I look for the +Móvil kiosk. It’s open but 18 people ahead of me all want a SIM. I decide to grab my bags meanwhile, come back 20 min later: still 14 people.
I have 8% battery, I can’t launch Uber without data, my phone runs on €€€ roaming. I end up accepting a tout taxi who tells me “Bella Vista, $60”. I should have paid $32 with Uber. Losses: 1h15 of time + $28 of inflated taxi + €18 of home-carrier roaming for the previous 3 hours.
That’s the standard scenario. Without an eSIM, arriving at Tocumen is poorly optimized.

With HolaFly — the optimized scenario
Jade, day 2 (re-ran the experiment for this article):
I buy the HolaFly Panama 10-day eSIM for $27 the morning of the flight. I get the QR code by email 30 seconds later. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan the QR. Install 2 min. I leave the eSIM OFF, my home SIM stays active for the flight.
On landing at Tocumen, in the jet bridge before Migración, I open Settings → HolaFly eSIM → ON. 30 seconds later: 4G displayed, I’m connected. I order my Uber while waiting for Migración. When I come out with my bags, the Uber driver is at the door. Total time lost: ZERO.
Difference: ~1h saved + $28 saved on the taxi. The eSIM paid for itself in the first hour.

Recommended plan for a settling expat: 10 days ($27) to cover arrival errands (bank, apartment viewing, groceries), then transition to a local +Móvil SIM ($15-20/month) once you have an address + a bank account.
Recommended plan for a scouting traveler: 15-20 days depending on your stay ($34-44).
How to activate HolaFly in 5 minutes (iPhone)
- Before the flight: buy at holafly.com (card or Apple Pay)
- You get 2 emails: confirmation + QR code to scan
- Settings (iOS) → Cellular → Add eSIM
- Scan QR code from your computer/tablet/print
- Name the eSIM “HolaFly Panama” (or whatever you want)
- DO NOT ACTIVATE: leave the eSIM OFF (Disabled). Otherwise the day counter starts immediately and you lose 50% of your duration during the flight.
- On landing: Settings → Cellular → HolaFly Panama → ON
- Check it’s set as “Default data plan”
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM to avoid a surprise bill
All of this takes 5 min before the flight + 30 sec on landing.
On Android (recent Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi)
The menu varies by maker:
- Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → SIM → Download a new plan
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add mobile plan
- Xiaomi/OPPO: Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → Add eSIM
The QR scans the same way. Manual activation at the right moment works the same.
HolaFly vs local +Móvil SIM — field comparison
| Criterion | HolaFly eSIM | Local +Móvil SIM |
|---|---|---|
| 30-day price | $54 (unlimited) | $15-20 (unlimited) |
| Setup before flight | ✅ 5 min online | ❌ Must be in Panama |
| Tocumen line | 0 min | 30-90 min depending on crowds |
| Remote activation | ✅ Toggle ON | ❌ In person at the kiosk |
| Keeps home number | ✅ Dual SIM | ✅ Dual SIM if dual-SIM phone |
| Local call number | ❌ (data only) | ✅ +507 XXXX XXXX |
| Receives home bank SMS | ✅ (home SIM active) | ✅ (home SIM active) |
| Unlimited hotspot | ✅ | ✅ |
| Province coverage | ✅ via Tigo/+Móvil | ✅ +Móvil native |
| Renewal | Buy a new eSIM | Top up in-app/kiosk |
Conclusion: optimal combo = HolaFly 10-15 days on arrival + local +Móvil SIM once you have your papers + address + bank account.
When HolaFly isn’t enough
- You stay >30 days: the local SIM is cheaper
- You need a Panamanian number for deliveries, Uber, banking: HolaFly gives no local number
- Phone too old (pre-2018) without eSIM: only the physical SIM works
- You’re heading into the Darién jungle / deep San Blas: no network works, HolaFly included
In those cases, head to the +Móvil kiosk at Tocumen or a +Móvil store in town the next day.
