Bocas del Toro Carnival is the Caribbean version of Panamanian Carnival. If Las Tablas is the Panamanian folkloric identity (polleras + floats + Spanish tradition), Bocas is the creole party — reggaeton, dancehall, beaches, English-speaking Caribbean vibes. A perfect alternative for those who find Las Tablas too intense or too classic.
Bocas del Toro in 30 seconds
Bocas del Toro Province = a Caribbean archipelago in northwest Panama, on the Costa Rica border. Population 13,000 on Isla Colón (the main island). Saturday — Creole opening
- 10am-12pm: First culeco on Calle 3 (main street), water and foam + reggaeton music
- 3pm-5pm: Calle 1 children’s parade + arrival of the candidate queens
- 8pm-11pm: Free concerts on Plaza Bolívar (popular Panamanian artists)
- midnight: First fireworks from the port
Sunday — Day of the comparsas
- 11am-2pm: More intense Calle 3 culeco + DJ sound systems
- 4pm-7pm: Comparsas parade (themed costumed groups) — the equivalent of the gala pollera at Las Tablas but more festive and less traditional
- 10pm-4am: Nights out in the Calle 3 bars (Aqua Lounge, Bookstore Bar, Mondo Taitu)
Monday — Queens’ Day + Beach
- 9am-11am: Beach day at Starfish or Red Frog (water taxi USD 4 each way, lots of expats)
- 1pm-3pm: Final culeco + giant water fight
- 6pm-8pm: Coronation of the Bocas Carnival Queen on Plaza Bolívar
- 10pm-5am: Carnival Night with Jamaican reggae bands + cumbia
Tuesday — The climax
- 10am-1pm: Last massive culeco (all of Isla Colón takes part)
- 3pm-6pm: Final combined Calle 1 + Calle 3 parade (a loop to see everything)
- 9pm-midnight: Big-show concert on Plaza Bolívar (never the same artist two years running — lots of Caribbean guests)
- midnight: Fireworks from 2 points (port + Isla Carenero) = stereo effect
Wednesday — Recovery day off
No official burial of the sardine (a difference from Las Tablas). Bars and restaurants open from 2pm. Recovery beach + a quiet dinner = perfect before heading back to Panama City on Thursday.

The beaches to combine with carnival
Starfish Beach (water taxi from Isla Colón, USD 4 each way)
The emblematic spot of Bocas. Starfish visible in the shallow water (20-30 cm). Restaurants on stilts. Do it in the morning before the groups arrive.
Red Frog Beach (Bastimentos, water taxi + 15-min walk)
The most famous beach of Caribbean Panama. Fine sand, palm trees, turquoise water. Venomous red frogs (rana fresa) visible in the adjacent jungle — hence the name.
Wizard Beach (Bastimentos, 30-min walk from Red Frog)
Wilder, fewer tourists. Beginner surfers. No facilities, so bring water and a towel.
Traps to avoid in Bocas during carnival
- Tap water in Bocas — unreliable even normally. During carnival with the crowds, outages happen. Bottled water mandatory.
- Last-minute booking — Air Panama flights saturated 4 months ahead. Calle 3 hotels full 3 months ahead. Decide by September 2026 at the latest.
- Water taxis after 10pm — reduced frequency, double the price. Plan to return earlier or plan an overnight on the spot.
- Drugs — Bocas has a “party” reputation. The Panamanian police run targeted checks during carnival (foreigners targeted). Real risk of arrest and prosecution.
- Mosquitoes in the rainy season — not a problem in February (dry season) but keep DEET as backup.
