Real scenario, Tuesday 3:25 PM, Panama City:
You’re at work in Costa del Este. Your 14-year-old leaves their international school at 3:30 PM. The school bus passes at 3:45 PM and normally drops them home at 4:05 PM. Your partner finishes at 5 PM and can pick them up.
At 4:15 PM, no message. You call 3 times with no answer. At 4:30 PM, you start to stress. At 4:45 PM, you’re considering calling the school office.
With Life 360 on the family’s 3 phones, at 3:31 PM you see the notification: “Léa left school”. At 3:57 PM: “Léa is home”. No more stress, no more 8 calls, no more calls to the school office.
That’s what this app solves for expats with kids in Panama. We tested it for 2 months as a family March-May 2026.

The expat family problem in Panama
When you move with teens to Panama, you face 3 problems you didn’t really have back home:
1. No reliable public school transport
International schools have their bus but limited to certain zones. For Bella Vista or El Cangrejo: no bus. Either a parent picks up (impossible if both parents work), or Uber/private taxi ($8-12 per trip), or the teen takes Uber alone.
Consequence: you DON’T KNOW if your teen got home safely until they message you. And they forget 3 times a week.
2. Unpredictable distances and traffic
Panama City: 7-8 km often separate the school from home, but with 5-7 PM traffic it can take 25-50 minutes. With Life 360 you see the trip progress in real time, no need to ask “where are you?”.
3. Teen in a new country, new places
At first, your teen does NOT know the city. You want to know if they took the wrong bus or went out with friends to the Mall without telling you. Not to punish them — just to know.
Recommended family test? Life 360 Gold plan $14.99/month for a family of 4 — school alerts, crash detection, 30-day history. 7-day free trial. Inside Panama tip: start with the free plan (enough for basic position) and upgrade to Gold only if you want the auto school/home alerts. → Try Life 360 — 7 days free
How we use it as a family (test March-May 2026)
Initial setup — 15 minutes
- Account creation in the app (1 admin parent, ideally with a dedicated family email)
- Invite the other members (invite link via WhatsApp or email)
- Enable continuous location on each phone (heavy battery use: 5-8% more per day)
- Create custom places: School (200m radius), Home (100m radius), Office Costa del Este (150m radius), Multiplaza Mall, grandparents’ home, etc.
- Configure alerts: who wants to be notified when someone arrives/leaves each place
Typical daily use
- 7:30 AM: alert “Léa leaves home” (off to school)
- 7:55 AM: alert “Léa arrives at School” — parent confirmed she got there
- 3:31 PM: alert “Léa leaves School”
- 3:57 PM: alert “Léa arrives Home” — parent confirmed she’s back
- 5:12 PM: “Mom leaves Office” — Dad knows to start dinner
What we DON’T do: we don’t look at trip details, we don’t grill a member who’s elsewhere (“you said the library, you’re at the Mall!”), we don’t pull the history for behavioral archaeology.
It’s a coordination tool, not a surveillance tool.
Life 360 Panama 2026 pricing
| Plan | Monthly price | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Basic location 2-3 members, enough for a 1-2 week test |
| Silver | $7.99 | 2 custom places + 1 day history |
| Gold ⭐ | $14.99 | Unlimited places + 30 days history + crash detection — recommended family with teens |
| Platinum | $24.99 | Identity protection + premium roadside + 1 year history |
Annual pricing: -15% vs monthly ($153 vs $180 on Gold).
Our recommendation: start with the free plan for 2 weeks to make sure it works in your context (good 4G coverage at home, battery OK, teen on board). Then upgrade to Gold annual ($153/year = ~$13/month).
Life 360 vs alternatives 2026
| App | Cross-platform | Place alerts | Crash detect | History | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Life 360 Gold | ✅ iOS+Android | ✅ unlimited | ✅ | 30 d | $14.99/mo |
| Apple Find My | ❌ iPhone only | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ | Free |
| Google Family Link | 🟡 Android-first | 🟡 limited | ❌ | 7 d | Free |
| WhatsApp live share | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ | Free |
| Bark Premium | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ | 30 d | $14/mo |
Typical cases:
- All-iPhone family → Find My is enough
- Mixed family (1 iPhone + Android) → Life 360
- Separated-parents family → Life 360 (shared admin across 2 households possible)
- Family with very distrustful teens → discussion first, then test Free
Conditions for it to work
✅ When Life 360 is useful
- Family with teens at international schools
- 2 working parents (need coordination)
- First month settling in Panama (places not yet familiar to the teen)
- Parent who travels often (need to know the remaining family is safe)
❌ When it’s pointless
- 18+ teen at university (transition to full autonomy)
- All-Apple family with Find My already set up
- Very distrustful teens who refuse (do NOT force it, no point creating conflict)
- Family in remote villages (Boquete altitude, Bocas Bastimentos): coverage too partial
Ethics + privacy considerations
Life 360 had controversies 2018-2021 over selling location data to data brokers. It’s documented (The Markup investigation 2021). Since 2022, the company stopped this practice and published a GDPR-compliant policy.
Our approach:
- Dedicated family email (not your work email) to limit cross-profiling
- No history beyond 30 days (use Gold plan not Platinum)
- Periodic disabling of ultra-sensitive places (doctor’s appointment, etc.) — Life 360 lets you “pause” your position
- Mandatory family discussion before installing — a teen who refuses has the right
- Re-evaluate every 6 months: older teen = more autonomy = gradually disable
